Does this scenario sound all too familiar?
“I am sorry to hear about your husband’s new diagnosis of high blood pressure, and I know it can feel overwhelming especially with little kids to take care of– but guess what? There’s a way of eating that can not only lower blood pressure but also help everyone in the family live a healthier life. It’s called the Mediterranean Diet, and I’m confident you can incorporate many of its staples into your family’s routine.”
What is the Mediterranean Diet?
The Mediterranean diet revolves around fresh, whole foods inspired by the traditional eating of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. This way of eating includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes, fish, and olive oil. Red meat is consumed rarely, and herbs and spices are used to add flavor while reducing excess salt added to meals.
Benefits for Busy Families
Adopting a Mediterranean-style diet can lead to numerous health benefits – like reducing your risk of heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers. For families busy with little kids, jobs, extracurricular activities and chronic conditions like high blood pressure or high cholesterol; this dietary approach can be particularly helpful as it emphasizes foods that support heart health and help regulate blood pressure. This means the entire family can eat the same thing!
Small Changes, Big Results
Even making small changes can make a big difference. How small? Adding an apple a day to everyone’s lunches. It’s always easier to add food in to your diet rather than take it away. Fruit is an easy way to transition kids to a Mediterranean Diet, while you very gradually reduce the amount of processed and packaged foods in your pantry. Over time replace chips or cookies for snacks, you could try buying nuts, dried fruit, or popcorn. If these are the only snacks, they are the ones the kids will grab!
I hope this helps you and your family feel healthier and happier! Let me know if you need any more tips or recipes. We’re in this together!
